On the day of the incident, Simpkins saw Tristen running, as usual, but didn’t think much of it until his husband received a call from another neighbor who had witnessed Tristen collapse. They promptly called 911, but unfortunately, help arrived too late. Simpkins expressed his sorrow, saying, “My heart just goes out to them. I mean, it is so sad. He was so young and had his whole life ahead of him.” He urged people to cherish their loved ones and express their love openly.
The incident occurred at the start of the cross-country season, a time when student-athletes like Tristen were preparing for their competitions. This week, athletes across various sports had been coping with unusually high temperatures in the area. On the day Tristen collapsed, temperatures had reached near-record highs. According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, temperatures at Cheatham Dam, located about 17 miles from Pleasant View, soared to 97 degrees on Monday and hit 100 degrees on Tuesday.
In light of the extreme heat, the Cheatham County School District had been adhering to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s heat policy, aiming to safeguard the health and well-being of student-athletes.
