The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office announced on Monday that the victims were Traiquielle Raheem Chambers, 29, and Paul Justin Stanley, 35, both residents of Birmingham.
Chambers was found shot in the 1400 block of First Avenue West around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, the city’s gunfire detection system, Shot Spotter, alerted West Precinct officers to the sounds of gunfire in the area. One Shot Spotter alert registered five gunshots, while another recorded 12. When officers arrived, they discovered Chambers collapsed in the street, surrounded by shell casings. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:49 p.m.
Sgt. Wade indicated that preliminary investigations suggest Chambers had been involved in a verbal altercation prior to the shooting, although it remains unclear how this dispute ended up at the location where he was found. Stanley was pronounced dead at the hotel at 11:49 a.m., but sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby did not disclose any details regarding the circumstances of his shooting. As of now, formal charges against the suspect in Stanley’s case have not yet been announced.
