Stanley Smith Obituary, Death – The Charleston County Coroner’s Office announced on Friday the identification of a man who lost his life in a crash on Savannah Highway earlier this week. The victim, Stanley Smith, aged 70, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident, which occurred around 3 a.m. on Wednesday at the intersection near Briarcliff Drive. Smith was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he later died.
According to Charleston County deputies, the collision involved two construction vehicles. One of these vehicles was towing a trailer that had three individuals aboard who were in the process of collecting traffic cones. The driver of that vehicle, Kendall Hawkins, made an illegal U-turn on Savannah Highway, leading to the crash with another vehicle.
The impact of the collision caused the three passengers on the trailer to be ejected onto the roadway, resulting in serious injuries. Emergency responders rushed them to the hospital for treatment; however, Smith unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the crash, Hawkins was charged with two counts of Felony Driving Under the Influence. Additionally, the other driver involved in the collision, identified as Rockarius King, faces charges for one count of driving under the influence and one count of having an open container in a motor vehicle.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing as authorities work to gather more information about the incident.
