Sophia Hayes Obituary, Death – An 18-year-old woman from Benton, Maine, tragically lost her life after the motorcycle she was riding collided with a vehicle in Rome. The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Sophia Hayes. The fatal accident occurred on Friday around 1:05 p.m. in the vicinity of 1002 Watson Pond Road.
According to officials, a deputy arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and applied two tourniquets to Hayes in an attempt to control her severe injuries while waiting for emergency medical personnel to arrive. Life-saving efforts were quickly initiated, and a LifeFlight helicopter was dispatched to transport Hayes for further medical treatment. The helicopter was scheduled to land at the nearby Travis Mills Foundation veterans retreat site, a short distance from the accident scene. However, the helicopter was diverted from the scene after 2:50 p.m. for unspecified reasons.
Due to the diversion of the helicopter, Hayes was transported by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Sadly, despite the efforts to save her life, Hayes was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. from the injuries she sustained in the crash.
In a statement released on Monday, the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office extended their deepest sympathies to the Hayes family, expressing sorrow for their loss. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the Hayes family for their loss,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release.
The crash is currently under investigation by members of the Maine State Police, who are working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. No charges are pending at this time, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities have stated that more information regarding the accident will be provided as the investigation continues.
