Samuel Sterling Caston Obituary, Death – The Allen County Coroner’s Office has revealed the identity of the man shot and killed by Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) officers on Monday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as 59-year-old Samuel Sterling Caston, a resident of Fort Wayne.

According to FWPD, the incident unfolded when officers were dispatched to Hessen Cassel Road at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Monday. The emergency call reported that Caston had assaulted his wife and subsequently threatened her with a firearm.

Police located Caston in his vehicle, but he deliberately collided with a police squad car before fleeing the scene. A pursuit ensued, culminating in Caston stopping in an alley near East Leith Street. At this location, police reported that Caston fired shots at the officers.

In response to the gunfire, FWPD officers returned fire, fatally wounding Caston. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The coroner’s office has classified Caston’s death as a homicide resulting from police action. This incident marks the 32nd homicide in Allen County for the year and the fourth fatal police-action shooting involving FWPD officers since June.

Earlier in the year, in February, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office concluded that there was no criminal liability in the shooting of Warren-Hill. Current investigations into other recent police-action shootings are still ongoing.
