Nelson Beckett Obituary, Death – Nelson Beckett, a 90-year-old veteran, was tragically killed during a carjacking outside a retirement community in southwest Houston. The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of Lonestar Living on Westbrae Parkway. According to police, a man in his late 20s approached Beckett and engaged him in conversation before attacking him. Surveillance footage shows the suspect assaulting Beckett, shooting him, and then stealing his car. As the suspect fled the scene, he ran over Beckett. Beckett was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Beckett’s car was found abandoned at an apartment complex less than three miles from the crime scene. His son, Tim Beckett, shared that Nelson Beckett is survived by two children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Nelson Beckett attended Abilene Christian University and served in the Navy, although he did not see combat. After his military service, he worked in sales and was actively involved in the Southwest Central Church of Christ, where he once served as an elder.
During the Sunday service following his death, the church addressed Beckett’s murder. Senior minister Steve Sargent described the attack as a senseless and brutal act against “the mildest of men.” He also mentioned that Beckett had attended a funeral at the church just days before his murder.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Houston Police Department’s homicide unit at 713-308-3600.
