Malcolm Burns Obituary, Death: Investigators have confirmed the identity of the man who was shot and killed by police inside a residence on Route 4 in Northwood early Tuesday morning. According to officials from the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office, the incident occurred around 5:17 a.m. when a Northwood police officer responded to a domestic violence call involving 34-year-old Malcolm Burns and his father.
Upon arrival, the officer and Burns engaged in a physical struggle. During this altercation, the officer discharged his weapon, striking Burns, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Sources indicate that Burns was reportedly armed at the time of the shooting.
Investigators have noted that the officer sustained injuries during the confrontation; however, these injuries were not life-threatening. Officials confirmed that the officer was not shot.
Cody Webster, a witness who rents rooms in the house located at 534 First New Hampshire Turnpike, was present at the time with his wife and their 9-year-old daughter. He recounted hearing a loud noise that sounded like someone being slammed against a wall, believing the incident involved a man trying to protect his son’s girlfriend from Burns.
Webster described the chaotic scene: “Around a quarter past 5, we heard a lot of screaming and banging, along with numerous threats. We opened our door to investigate.” When they inquired about the situation, one of the homeowners indicated he was not alright, while Burns allegedly told them to mind their own business. Following this, they closed the door, and Webster’s wife called 911.
Once the police arrived, Webster reported hearing them demand that Burns surrender. An autopsy for Burns is scheduled for Wednesday, as the investigation continues.
The identity of the officer involved in the shooting is being withheld while a formal interview is conducted.
Notably, the residence where the police responded on Tuesday is the same location linked to a previous standoff in July, during which Burns was arrested.
