Lemuel A. Wells Obituary, Death – On October 3, 2024, a fatal accident took place on Pike County Road 488, just south of Highway 54, at 11:17 a.m., resulting in the death of an elderly truck driver. The crash occurred when 81-year-old Lemuel A. Wells, driving a 2000 International 9900i truck, failed to yield to an oncoming train, which led to a tragic collision. The train involved in the incident was a westbound General Electric GP402 locomotive operated by 49-year-old Adam Zink from Roodhouse, Illinois. As the truck traveled southbound, the train struck its side, causing significant damage and ultimately resulting in Wells’ death.
Wells, a resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Poggemeire from Pike County Memorial Hospital. This declaration came at 12:08 p.m., less than an hour after the crash occurred. Unfortunately, Wells had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to the fatal outcome. His body was later transported by Bibb-Veach Funeral Home, based in Bowling Green.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol was responsible for conducting the investigation into the fatal crash, with the assistance of several patrol officers on the scene. Their examination of the accident sought to determine the exact cause of the collision and ensure all necessary details were recorded.
The incident has brought attention to the dangers of failing to yield at railroad crossings, particularly in rural areas where such crossings may not be as frequently encountered. Although the precise circumstances leading to the crash are still under investigation, it highlights the importance of safety measures such as wearing seat belts and being vigilant at railroad crossings.
