Kioyom Athum Obituary, Death – A man who was fatally stabbed in a park in Melbourne has been identified as 28-year-old Kioyom Athum. Athum was last seen by his sister in the Derrimut region of the city’s western area, accompanied by four other men around 9 PM on Friday.
According to police reports, one of several individuals present in Balmoral Park contacted authorities at 4:20 AM on Saturday after discovering the 28-year-old unconscious, while others in the group attempted to perform CPR.
Upon the arrival of emergency services, resuscitation efforts continued, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His bereaved family visited the park on Saturday.
The football field was secured as State Emergency Service and forensic police conducted a thorough search of the area, examining a vehicle and collecting evidence, which included clothing and multiple knives. Several residences where blood was found on the pavement were also cordoned off.
Authorities are working to reconstruct the events that transpired in the seven hours leading up to Athum’s death. Local residents informed 7NEWS that instances of anti-social behavior in the park were frequent.
Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas indicated that the victim appeared to have sustained stab wounds, although a post-mortem examination would be necessary to confirm this.
“I believe several knives have been discovered in the vicinity,” he stated. “Are these connected to the incident? They will require forensic analysis to ascertain any links.” Thomas noted that multiple individuals were reportedly seen fleeing the scene, but this information is still under verification.
“It seems our victim does not have any affiliations with gangs; however, it is still early in the investigation, and we are diligently examining the circumstances.”
Police are urging anyone who was in the area, particularly those present in the park at the time, to come forward with information.
