Emmanuel Lopez Obituary, Death – A Franklin High School football player, Emmanuel Lopez, was among the three people who lost their lives in a collision involving a semitruck on Interstate 10 in Arizona on Saturday evening. The crash occurred near the New Mexico state line.
While the Arizona Department of Public Safety had not officially released the names of the victims, Franklin football coach Daren Walker confirmed on Sunday that Lopez was one of those who died in the accident.
Coach Walker spoke about Lopez’s impact on the team, noting, “Emmanuel worked hard to make the lineup and be a starter for us. He was someone who always had a smile on his face. He was an important part of our team and a friend to us all. Our kids are hurting. Our prayers are with Emmanuel’s family and friends.”
According to Walker, Lopez was traveling to Arizona to attend the NFL game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Arizona Cardinals. Lopez had been a dedicated member of the Franklin football program throughout his four years at the school. This season, he recorded eight tackles in three games, and last season, he had a total of 41 tackles.
The Franklin Cougars booster group paid tribute to Lopez on social media, stating, “You were a voice for others. Your smile lit up any room. You are and will always be our Franklin Family.” The post, which asked for prayers, highlighted Lopez’s role on the team, where he wore the number 22.
In response to the tragedy, the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over Lopez’s death. The statement read, “We are deeply saddened that one of our Franklin students passed away yesterday while traveling to Phoenix with his family for a football game. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those affected during this incredibly challenging time. We encourage everyone to be respectful of the family’s privacy and for our community to come together in support and compassion as we navigate through this loss.”
EPISD also announced that counseling services are available for students and staff both on campus and through the Emergence Health Network at 915-779-1800 to support those affected by the loss.
