Antonio Darnell Harris Obituary, Death – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is investigating a fatal hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in northeast Charlotte. The incident occurred on Sunday, September 1, at approximately 10:15 p.m. on the 1100 block of West Sugar Creek Road.
Upon arrival, officers found a man lying unresponsive in the median of the northbound lanes. The pedestrian was later identified as 34-year-old Antonio Darnell Harris. Charlotte Fire and Medic personnel responded to the scene and transported Harris to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that Harris was standing in the median when he was struck by a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling in the wrong direction on West Sugar Creek Road. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to assist or render aid to Harris and fled the scene.
Following an investigation, CMPD identified and located the driver of the Silverado as 31-year-old Leonardo Hernandez Perez. Perez has been taken into custody by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and faces several charges, including:
– Felony death by vehicle
– Felony hit and run causing death
– Driving without a license
– Reckless driving
