Brad McNew Obituary, Death – A Florida corrections officer, Brad McNew, was fatally shot while trying to intervene in a suspected domestic violence situation. McNew, who had just finished his shift, witnessed a man, Demaurea Grant, assaulting a woman at a Love’s Travel Stop in Jacksonville, Florida, around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday. When McNew attempted to assist the victim, Grant shot and killed him.
McNew had served with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) for 24 years and was remembered as a devoted public servant, husband, father, and friend. Authorities launched a nationwide manhunt for Grant, who was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Sunday morning.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters stated that Grant faces multiple charges, including murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and aggravated assault with a firearm. He is currently being held without bond and awaits extradition to Florida.
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are interviewing the woman involved in the incident.
