Victor Bocaya Obituary, Death – On Friday, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) released the identities of two men involved in a violent incident that occurred on Fiesta Island last Wednesday, which included both a stabbing and a shooting.
The incident unfolded around 10:03 a.m. when officers responded to reports of a stabbing on Fiesta Island. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered two men along the shoreline: one had sustained stab wounds, while the other had been shot. The stabbed individual was identified as Victor Bocaya, an off-duty officer with 25 years of service in the San Diego Community College District Police Department. The man who was shot, 41-year-old Brian Maloney III, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the SDPD’s investigation, Bocaya had gone to Fiesta Island that day to walk his dogs. At the same time, Maloney was parked about 75 feet away from Bocaya’s vehicle. Before Bocaya could take his dogs out, Maloney approached him while shouting. The confrontation escalated when Bocaya displayed his police badge and attempted to call the police using his cell phone. At this point, Maloney allegedly attacked Bocaya with a knife, leading Bocaya to draw his personal firearm and shoot Maloney once.
Although Bocaya was off-duty during the incident, the SDPD is treating it as an officer-involved shooting due to his actions of identifying himself as a police officer. The Homicide Unit is currently conducting an investigation, which will later be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to assess whether Bocaya could face any criminal charges related to the shooting.
