Carl Kuhn Obituary, Death – The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office has released more details regarding a fatal accident involving a train and a tractor that occurred on Monday afternoon near Jackson Junction. According to investigators, the incident happened around 2:32 p.m. as the tractor driver was traveling west on 128th Street. The driver crossed Highway 24 and attempted to cross the nearby railroad tracks.
Reports indicate that the tractor driver, identified as 60-year-old Carl Kuhn of Fort Atkinson, noticed the approaching train at the last moment and tried to stop. The train conductor also saw the tractor and applied the train’s brakes in an effort to avoid the collision. However, despite both attempts to prevent the crash, the train collided with the center of the tractor at a speed of approximately 30 mph.
The impact caused the tractor to split between the cab and engine compartment, ejecting Kuhn through the front windshield. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but unfortunately, Kuhn was pronounced dead on site.
The investigation into the tragic crash is ongoing.
