Jerry Savage, Marcia Savage Obituary, Death – A married couple in their 70s tragically lost their lives when a tree fell through the roof of their South Carolina home during Hurricane Helene. The couple, identified as 78-year-old Jerry Savage and 74-year-old Marcia Savage, resided in Beech Island. Authorities reported that they were pronounced dead at the scene by a coroner from the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
Their grandson, John Savage, shared that the couple was discovered hugging each other in their bed on September 27. He expressed that their family believes it was part of a divine plan for them to pass together rather than have one suffer alone without the other.
“When they pulled them out of there, my grandpa apparently heard the tree snap beforehand and rolled over to try and protect my grandmother,” he said.
“They loved each other to their dying day,” he added.
Family members have fondly remembered Jerry and Marcia as high school sweethearts who had been married for over 50 years. Their daughter, Tammy Estep, described their love as “immediate, and it was everlasting.” Social media condolences highlighted the couple’s generous, kind, and humble nature.
In light of their passing, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses. A woman claiming to be a relative described Jerry and Marcia as “two of the kindest and most generous people I’ve ever known.” The couple is survived by two children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The GoFundMe page states, “As many of you may know, Jerry and Marcia Savage were taken too soon during Hurricane Helene. I am raising funds to cover the costs of the funeral to lay them to rest.”
In addition to the Savages, there were at least two other fatalities in Beech Island attributed to the hurricane. Michael Roukous, 29, from Dexter, New York, died when a tree fell through the roof of the house he was renting in the area. A 70-year-old man also lost his life after a tree crashed through his home.
The Savage couple and the others are among more than 200 fatalities reported as Hurricane Helene caused devastation across multiple states. In response to the widespread damage, President Joe Biden is visiting the hardest-hit areas, meeting with federal, state, and local officials, as well as first responders. He is also engaging with residents, small business owners, and farmers to assess the impact of the storm.
“What we’re seeing across North Carolina right now is bigger than politics,” the president said. “There are no red or blues states. We are one United States of America.”
