On the morning of Saturday, September 7, around 5:30 a.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a death at Poncho’s Kitchen, a location near river mile 13 on the Colorado River. Park rangers quickly responded to the scene, where they found the deceased individual.
The man has been identified as 59-year-old Patrick Horton from Salida, Colorado. Horton was on the 10th day of a non-commercial river trip along the Colorado River when he was found by members of his party.
The NPS is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Horton’s death, and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Arizona is also involved in the inquiry.
