According to Captain Leland Laseter of the New Iberia Police Department (NIPD), the incident occurred on Sunday night at around 9:15 p.m., when police received a call reporting gunshots in the area of East Persian Street and Sofas Street.

Simone, Broussard’s mother, shared that her daughter was sitting on the front steps of a home with her friend, Kasey Egbi, when the situation escalated. Captain Laseter noted that while officers were on their way to the scene, they received another call reporting that someone had been shot in the 500 block of Sofas Street. Tragically, both Broussard and Egbi were shot and killed on those front steps. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the identity of the suspect remains unknown.

Simone also revealed that a 71-year-old family friend was shot in the leg during the incident. While Simone did not disclose the woman’s name, Captain Laseter mentioned that she was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Lafayette and was released later that night.

Simone, who preferred not to appear on camera during this difficult time, wanted to share some thoughts about her daughter. Captain Laseter stated that detectives are actively investigating the events that led to this tragic crime, hoping to find some clarity and justice.

In the wake of this tragedy, the NIPD is hopeful that their new camera system will assist in solving the case. Captain Laseter explained that the department is currently utilizing footage from cameras in the area to capture images or videos of the suspect or suspects responsible for this crime. He mentioned that Phase One of installing nearly 500 cameras around the city is about 80% complete, and they are considering adding even more cameras in Phase Two to enhance their surveillance capabilities.

This incident has left the community of New Iberia shaken and seeking answers. As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice. The use of the new camera system represents a significant step toward improving safety and security in the city, providing a critical tool for law enforcement to solve crimes and prevent future tragedies.

The sudden loss of Dewanna Broussard and Kasey Egbi has left a void in the lives of their families and friends, who are now left to mourn their untimely deaths. As the investigation unfolds, the community stands in solidarity with the grieving families, hoping for justice and an end to such senseless violence.
